Esperança is a nonprofit organization whose objective is to bring hope, provide health, and transform communities for the world’s poor. This is accomplished through volunteer surgical, clean water and sanitation, home building, food security and nutrition, disease prevention, education, and treatment programs.

An average of 10 surgical teams of volunteers travel to Nicaragua each year. Currently, surgeons in the following specialties are sent: general, gynecology, plastic, ophthalmologic, orthopedic, pediatric, ENT, and urology. A surgical team primarily consists of the lead surgeon, an anesthesiologist, and an OR nurse or tech.
